In her pre-sale talk at the Indiana Native Plant Sale & Auction May 11, INPS President Ellen Jacquart presented details of the new Terrestrial Invasive Plant Rule that went into effect April 18. The rule bans the growing, sale, and introduction of 44 plants deemed invasive by the Indiana Invasive Species Council.

Members of INPS and other environmental organizations worked hard to get this rule made into law. Ellen’s presentation tells the story:

There is a movement afoot! Invasive plant species are wreaking havoc on our natural
areas, but communities are fighting back—with knowledge, organization, and the right tools.

Dawn Slack, Director of Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy, will highlight some outstanding tools for conservation and invasive species management. She will also share how neighborhood discussions and citizen science get results and how you can use the EDDMapS 4 app to report invasive species populations where you find them. Refreshments provided.

A local article explains why the DNR pulled Callery pear from the proposed rule banning invasive plants from being sold in Indiana:

Invasive Plant Advisory Committee chair Dawn Slack points out that invasive species negatively impact our natural areas, areas that offer sanctuaries for rare, threatened and endangered species and that provide recreation, beauty, local revenue (e.g. Brown County State Park), and many additional attributes.

Help NE-INPAWS help wildflowers.

Be the change. Removing one bad plant makes a difference!

GET EDUCATED
Invasive Species Workshop
Sat., April 29, 9:30A–3:30P
Ouabache State Park, Bluffton. Meet at Trails End Shelter.

Identification Tools and Field Practice
Participants will learn proper identification skills and best-practice techniques for removal of invasive species. After a lunch, attendees will mark invasives in the park and spread native plant seed. Email Jody at jheaston@dnr.in.gov to sign up.

GET SOME PRACTICE
Invasive Species I.D. Hike w/Optional Garlic Mustard Pull
Sat., June 3, 10A–12P
Metea County Park, Fort Wayne. Meet at Entrance Gate Parking Lot.

One garlic mustard plant contains thousands of seeds.

Nate Simmons, Blue Heron Ministries, A Land Trust, helps you understand how invasives are taking a toll on our natural spaces. You’ll witness the destructive power of invasive species, like Asian bush honeysuckle and garlic mustard, in what should be pristine natural spaces along the Cedar Creek corridor. Plan to stay after the hike to pull garlic mustard, and your park entrance fee is waved.

Let us know you’re onboard at our facebook event page.

“It is amazing what one person’s donated time can accomplish.”
   — Alec Snelson, assistant property manager, Ouabache State Park

GET INVOLVED
Here’s what you can do right now.
The Auburn Parks and Recreation Department is having an Arbor Day Tree Sale Friday, April 21, 8A-3P, and Saturday, April 22, 8A-12N [today and tomorrow].

While that’s a great idea, several of the trees and shrubs the department is offering are invasive and non-native species, including the ornamental, but dangerous, Cleveland pear tree.

Representatives of the Northeast Chapter have asked the department not to put more ornamental trees into Indiana’s ecosystem. While the department agreed to remove a the pear from next year’s list, it will proceed with selling the 10 stocked this year. Each ornamental pear produces thousands of seeds that have little nutritional value to wildlife. Just these 10 trees alone can produce hundreds of thousands of seeds.

You can:
1. Lend your voice to the effort. Call Eric Ditmars at the Auburn Parks Department at 260.925.2997 x 1801.

2. Pool money with others to buy a tree in order to destroy it. Share why you’ve chosen to do so.

3. Contact your local nursery or gardening center. Ask them to stop stocking ornamental pears that are so dangerous to Indiana’s ecology.

4. Encourage them to “grow native” by pointing them to the Grow Native INPAWS website.

5. Let others see your respectful, but concerned, thoughts on facebook. Spread the word. Snap a photo of pear trees gone rogue where you see it and share. Education is our most powerful tool.

The Brown County Native Woodlands Project (bcnwp.org) is seeking volunteers from organizations that share an interest in the control of invasive plants.

BCNWP has been engaged in an effort within Brown County State Park for the past 5 years and seeks support for this project, which is described below. We would like to develop an email address list of individuals who would consider helping out occasionally and would like to be informed of scheduled work sessions. Email to CR91LJL@AOL.COM to get on the list.

Project Description:

The project is a cooperative effort between the Brown County Native Woodlands Project (bcnwp.org), the Parks and Reservoirs division of the DNR, and The Nature Conservancy (tnc.org) with occasional support from The Friends of Brown County State Park, Habitat Solutions, the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association (hmba.org), and various individual volunteers.

The BCNWP strategic plan emphasizes invasive control on large land holdings in Brown County as a way to make significant gains in the county. The largest land holding in the county is the state park and the DNR was pleased to support this project.

Initially, the effort was focused on eliminating Japanese stilt grass along the newly constructed mountain bike trails. This effort continues, but has expanded to include watersheds that affect the bike trails and to include other invasive species in these areas. Multiflora rose dominates the understory of some areas in the park, particularly the lower elevations and moist areas.

2014 is the fifth consecutive year of the project. Great strides have been made in controlling stilt grass and thinning the population of multiflora, barberry, and autumn olive. Nonetheless, there still exist many “opportunities.” Stilt grass appearance is much thinner and has disappeared in some treated areas. Multiflora has been reduced considerably and the boundary of the heaviest infestations pushed back.

Treatment methods:

Invasive control at BCSP involves spraying of herbicides through either a foliar spray or using the “cut-stump” method where only a small amount of herbicide is applied to the stalk of a brushy plant after it has been cut off.

The primary species being attacked are multiflora rose, Japanese stilt grass, Japanese barberry, autumn olive, privet, vinca, and bush honeysuckle, in order of frequency. The stilt grass treatment season lasts from July through August so that will be the focus during the summer months.

The herbicide depends on the technique and species.

            Poast for foliar treatment of stilt grass

            Glyphosate for foliar treatment of all others

            Pathfinder II for cut-stump

The technique depends on the species, size, and accessibility.

Multiflora rose & Japanese Barberry – cut-stump for mature plants, foliar for smaller plants and dense stands where access to the base is limited.

Stilt grass —  foliar

Autumn olive, bush honeysuckle, and privet – foliar for less that 2 ft. in height else cut-stump

Herbicide is prepared off-site and is usually applied using a back-pack sprayer which can contain up to 4 gallons when full. A full back-pack sprayer weighs about 36 pounds, so we don’t start out with a full container if the individual isn’t accustomed to that heavy load. There will be occasional opportunities for someone to help simply by driving a pickup truck for roadside spraying while someone else walks behind using a motorized spayer mounted in the bed of the pickup. The truck will be supplied.

The cut-stump method requires the use of some type of pruner. When cutting multiflora, we generally use a long handled manual pruner or a motorized hedge trimmer type of pruner. Other species such as autumn olive are easily cut down with a standard manual pruner.

Work Schedule:

Work is coordinated by Len Logterman and is generally done on weekday mornings from about 8am-11am. Special work sessions can be arranged for evenings or Saturday mornings for those who aren’t available on weekday mornings.

Small groups of 6 or less are preferred. The ability to identify each of the species is a plus. Teams of 2 may be assigned to work together in a particular area. An inexperienced volunteer would be paired with an experienced individual.

Attire:

            * Sturdy work boots which are high enough to cover the ankle.

            * Long pants

            * Gloves

            * Long sleeves are optional, but recommended when working on multiflora

            * Safety glasses

            * Cell phone

            *If you have a smart phone, load the Maprika app and install the BCSP map

Terrain:

Terrain will vary from grassy roadside to a rugged groomed trail to rocky creek beds, to heavy vegetation and vines which require very careful foot-work.

Most work areas are heavily shaded and most work sessions avoid mid-day heat and sun.

Most of the work will be focused on the northern part of the park with the exception of some of the roadsides. Some work areas are well off the beaten track and will require transport via 4WD truck to a jumping off point and then hiking as much as ¾ mile while searching out and treating the target species.

Contact:

Send an email to CR91LJL@AOL.COM if you wish to volunteer or be informed of scheduled work sessions.

The post Volunteer with Brown County Native Woodlands Project first appeared on INPS.

Central Chapter’s Invasives Swat Team is planning a volunteer day to remove
bush honeysuckle and other invasives at Holliday Park in Indianapolis. Volunteers will meet at the nature center on Thursday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m., and work until about 1:00. This will be a followup to work that has been done previously, in a continuing effort to rid the park of invasive plants.

Holiday Park contains high quality natural areas, but like almost all Indianapolis
area parks, continually battles non-native, invasive plants. Holiday Park is located at 6363 Spring Mill Road.

Anyone interested in helping should contact Tom Hohman at pastpres@inpaws.org.

The post Invasives removal at Holliday Park first appeared on INPS.
