Our nursery is in the NE region of the state with a high concentration of lakes, therefore conservation and good stewardship is important to not only our business but also our customer base. Avoiding invasive species is not only good business in our demographics, it's the right thing to do, so we will start our business this way and commit to maintaining it this way for the duration. I plan to stock my nursery with natives from Heartland Restoration Services which is already one of your certified sources. We will sell other trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals, but none that are listed as invasive.

We are a small farm in downtown Indianapolis, using organic methods to grow top-quality vegetables and herbs for our customers. Since 2011, our on-farm nursery has grown vegetable, herb, and berry plants without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers. In 2022, we are adding a selection of about 25 landscape-friendly sun and shade Indiana native plants to our offerings. These are available through our online store and at the farmers market. To provide customers an even greater diversity of species, our partner Native Plants Unlimited will be offering a plant pre-order and pick-up option at our farm during May. In the future, we hope to offer more species including Indiana native shrubs.
Friends of the Sands (LIMITED SALE DATES)
Friends of the Sands is a volunteer-run organization whose mission is to promote the natural areas and heritage of Kankakee Sands in Newton County, IN. Funds from our native plant sale support conservation efforts in Newton Co. To support our efforts, we suggest a donation of $2 per plant. Friends of the Sands offers over 50 species of native flowers, grasses, and shrubs at a one-time, pre-order event each May. Seeds for our sale are locally collected by volunteers within the Kankakee Sands ecoregion. Our plants are grown and nurtured in The Nature Conservancy’s Kankakee Sands greenhouse. Please visit our website for our May native plant pick-up date, order form, and species list.
Empire Perennials & Apiary
I started growing native, Indiana perennials in 2019 for my 3 acres. I decided the following year that I would start growing perennials for sale and had a good first year with a limited inventory. One of my main objectives is to try and grow some uncommon natives and expand my inventory. I collect seeds from local plants as much as possible to preserve local genotypes. I list on my blog where seeds were harvested or the company from which I purchased seeds. Currently, I grow and sell on my property, cash only and advertise on Facebook. I hope to sell at Farmers markets in the near future.
