Mad Farmers’ Nursery, is a farm-based nursery on the south side of Indianapolis. We got our start as a produce farm, growing top-quality veggies for farmers markets. We expanded from farm to nursery to offer our seedlings to home gardeners and again recently, as demand grew, expanded our offerings to include Indiana native plants as well. We’ve been delighted by the process of learning native plants in our own home landscape, and then helping our community do so as well. As a small nursery we currently grow some natives from seed, and source many from local and regional wholesale growers. We are following the emerging research on cultivars of natives and will carry a select few if they offer our customers the benefits of “straight species” along with desired characteristics like smaller, tidier stature for urban settings. We hope that a few “gateway plants” will convince more people to plant native! We offer native trees, shrubs, and perennials seasonally beginning in April, through spring, and into our June Solstice Native Plant Sale. We go mostly dormant in summer, then re-open for our September Equinox Native Plant sales with even more trees and shrubs. Friends of the Sands is a volunteer-run organization whose mission is to promote the natural areas and heritage of Kankakee Sands in Newton County, IN. Funds from our native plant sale support conservation efforts in Newton Co. To support our efforts, we suggest a donation of $2 per plant. Friends of the Sands offers over 50 species of native flowers, grasses, and shrubs at a one-time, pre-order event each May. Seeds for our sale are locally collected by volunteers within the Kankakee Sands ecoregion. Our plants are grown and nurtured in The Nature Conservancy’s Kankakee Sands greenhouse. I started growing native, Indiana perennials in 2019 for my 3 acres. I decided the following year that I would start growing perennials for sale and had a good first year with a limited inventory. One of my main objectives is to try and grow some uncommon natives and expand my inventory. I collect seeds from local plants as much as possible to preserve local genotypes. I list on my blog where seeds were harvested or the company from which I purchased seeds. Currently, I grow and sell on my property, cash only and advertise on Facebook. I hope to sell at Farmers markets in the near future.

Native Plants Unlimited only sells species native to Indiana and surrounding states, with almost all native to Indiana. NPU holds an herbaceous plant sale in May, a woody plant sale in September, and a bare root sale in winter. In total, we offer over 300 species of native plants each year- the largest retail selection in Indiana.
