The Exotic World of Turkey’s Native Flora
Eyup Erdogan, one of our newer INPAWS members, will be sharing the native plants of his homeland with us the first Sunday in March. It sounds like they have as many imported flowers as we do. I’m wondering if Turkey has problems with our natives being invasive over there. Come hear Eyup, and I’m sure we will learn some interesting facts as well as see some gorgeous flowers.
Turkey has more than 11,000 plant taxa and one-third of them are endemic to Turkey.
The plant richness is almost equal to the plant diversity of the European continent where about 13,000 plant taxa grow. The reason for this diversity of plants is that Turkey has three major phytogeographic regions where climate, topography and geology vary.
Eyup Erdogan grew up in Turkey where he completed his biology/botany education. He is a member of INPAWS. He is a co-author of two new taxa to Turkey and has to his credit over 20 papers or conference presentations. His research area includes floristic surveys, plant morphology, and anatomy.
